THE BENEFITS OF
FOREST THERAPY

"It is clear that our bodies still recognize nature as our home."
- Yoshifumi Miyazaki

Stress Reduction & Relaxation

A primary benefit of forest therapy is its ability to reduce stress and promote relaxation. Studies have shown that spending time in nature, forests in particular, can help lower cortisol levels, the hormone associated with stress. Immersing yourself in nature, noticing the gentle rustling of leaves, the scent of pine trees, and the dappled sunlight filtering through the branches, all work together to create a calming and tranquil experience. Forest therapy provides an outlet from the hectic pace of daily life, offering a much-needed respite and a chance to recharge.

Improved Mental Wellbeing

Studies show that forest therapy not only lowers the stress hormone cortisol, but it may also help improve feelings of anxiety, depression, and improve mood. By combining mindfulness practice, exposure to the natural compounds in the air called phytoncides, and simply by nature’s way of sparking a sense of awe, forest therapy helps to regulate our nervous system which positively impacts our mood and feelings of anxiety.

Naturally Boosts Your Immune System

Forests can help improve your immune system. Trees and plants release natural organic compounds called phytoncides (like the scent of pine trees). Phytoncides have been shown to be antimicrobial, antifungal, and anti-insecticidal, among other beneficial qualities. When we breathe in these compounds, studies show that phytoncides help reduce the stress hormone, cortisol, in our bodies. They also enhance the activity of natural killer (NK) white blood cells in our bodies, which help fight infection and increase immunity. When we are less stressed, NK cells are better able to do their jobs.

Spending time in nature also exposes you to a wider variety of microbes, which can contribute to a healthier immune system. This exposure helps strengthen your body’s defense mechanisms and can have long-lasting effects on your overall health.

Improves Your Physical Health

Our physical health is enhanced when we spend time in nature. The fresh air in forested environments is typically cleaner and more oxygen-rich, providing a revitalizing effect on the respiratory system. You may have noticed that after spending time outdoors, such as at the beach or on a hike, you sleep better. Our bodies come back to a more natural rhythm that helps us to digest better, regulate our blood pressure better and manage our emotional and mental health better. When we spend time in nature, our bodies are healthier.
